Happy Last Day of February, dear Patrons! I hope your winter has been going well, and that you're all staying warm and safe. Our winter, here in the Pacific Northwest, has mostly been gentle so far, with plenty of rain and a little bit of snow (just a foot, and it was gone within four days).

This month's piece, Suspended, began with the image you see above. (When I'm in need of inspiration, I often "play" images or artwork.) With the image on my music stand, I started with the guitar, and noodled around until the right chords surfaced. (According to my synesthesia, several of the "right" chords for this image are the suspended chords Asus2 and Asus4, which seems satisfyingly appropriate.)

Ironically, tracking the guitar part was a bit of a challenge because it was raining intermittently, and the gutter outside my studio window was dripping loudly. Frustratingly, the semi-rhythmic tap of the drips was coming through on the mics. To track the guitar, I had to wait for the rain to stop, and then wait some more for the dripping to stop, and then track as much as I could before it all started up again. Finally my sweet husband cleaned out the gutter, which had become clogged by recent stormwrack, and the dripping thankfully stopped. (In contrast, tracking the cello part went much more smoothly; once I had the guitar to play against, the image improvisation pretty much flowed out of the cello -- without any frustrating drips!)

Stay warm, dry, safe and well!
