Shenanigans with Sharks

Hello, dear Patrons! For various reasons, I don't seem to have much new music in me right now -- it's been quite a month here -- so this month's piece is a duo improv between me and Geli Wuerzner (violin). We improvised it "live" in my studio several years ago, and I've been saving it for a rainy day (or, in this case, a "rainy" month -- though the weather here in Seattle has been fairly pleasant of late).

This piece is on the lighthearted side (for a change :). An upbeat melody takes center stage, although multiple references to Large Graceful Ocean Predators With Many Teeth have sneaked in somehow. (Our improvisations seem to have a mind of their own, so we usually just follow wherever the music leads. We never know what to expect… but I can tell you that whatever we were expecting, it wasn't this!)

Cover image description: A cross-sectional view of The Ocean Deep, with a strip of nearly-white sky at the very top and undulating teal-blue waves beneath. The lower 3/4 of the image is underwater, intensely teal-blue near the surface and nearly blue-black at the very bottom. Rays of sunlight penetrate the water's surface and radiate down to the depths. At the bottom, the rocky ocean floor remains in near-darkness. Two shark silhouettes lurk in the deepest shadows, while one hovers closer to the surface, and another swims about halfway down. Several schools of smaller fish, and a host of tiny bright bubbles, add texture to the middle depths. The title text "Shenanigans with Sharks" appears in large, slightly spiky dark-teal letters across the sky at the top; below, against the middle depths, the subtext is in white and reads "Betsy Tinney, cello" and "Geli Wuerzner, violin."
