about

This piece is a musical depiction of one of my favorite paintings, "Persephone," by Kristen Haakenson (hearthstonefables.com). Persephone hangs in my studio right where I can see it when I'm playing.

About this piece: To "play" this painting, I started with the green vine (G drone) and leaves (a higher G, mostly in pairs) that frame the central image. I then added the pomegranates (an intermittent low D) and the stars (a high pizzicato). Once the frame was in place, I brought in Persephone's melody (the main bowed cello line). Once that first melody was in place, it was clear that Persephone needed a second melody as well - probably because in the painting, she seems to be of two minds: walking forward while gazing back over her shoulder.

Kristen, thank you for the inspiration!
