Midnight at Sea

from Cello Noodles, Vol. III by Betsy Tinney

Picture a cabin on a darkling lake deep in the Arkansas woods. An October moon hangs overhead in a sea of stars, and owls and crickets sing in counterpoint from the treetops and the bushes.

Inside the cabin, a guitarist, a cellist, and a fount of unborn music swirl together in a magical ocean of possibility. A breath… two breaths. Then a few notes escape from the guitar, glittering like stars reflected in the water. A breeze of cello whispers in reply, the guitar responds; and then the music takes on a life of its own… somehow, the song itself knows when it is done. Magic? Perhaps… you decide.

This piece features S.J. Tucker (guitar) and me (Betsy Tinney, cello). It was improvised (and recorded live) at The Pixie House on October 7, 2017, and was mixed by S.J. Tucker (thanks Sooj!). The photo above, which I took last year, is of this very lake.
