Braided River

from Cello Noodles, Vol. I by Betsy Tinney

Braided rivers have many smaller channels that continually split and rejoin, creating a braided appearance. I didn't actually have a braided river in mind when I began this piece, but when it was complete, I realized that the three cello parts behaved much like the channels of a braided river.

To create this piece, I began improvising on a simple melody in A minor, and recorded this as the "center" cello track. Then, I went back and improvised two additional accompanying tracks, one at a time (the "left" and "right" tracks). All three tracks were improvised start-to finish as heard on the finished recording. The cello on this recording is my old wooden cello, Godiva.
